Base oil is the foundation of lubricants, making up 70–90% of a typical motor oil or industrial lubricant. It is derived from refining crude oil or through chemical synthesis. Additives are then mixed with base oils to create lubricants with specific properties.
And classified into the below groups
GROUP 1 | GROUP 2 | GROUP 3 |
---|---|---|
Solvent-refined mineral oil | Hydrotreated mineral oil | Severely hydro cracked mineral oil |
Least refined, highest impurities | More refined than Group I | Higher VI (>120), very pure Sometimes marketed as "synthetic" in the U.S. |
Viscosity Index (VI): 80–120 | VI: 90–120, low sulfur | Sometimes marketed as “synthetic” in the U.S. |
Use: Older engines, simple industrial lubricants | Use: Motor oils, industrial lubricants | Use: High-performance motor oils |
SN 150, SN500, BS 150 | SN 150, SN 200, SN 500, SN 600 | Cst 4, Cst 6, Cst 8 |
Sulphur granules and lumps are small, uniform particles of elemental Sulphur, typically yellow and used in a wide range of industrial and agricultural applications. These are produced by solidifying molten Sulphur into granules for easier handling, transport, and application.
Uses of Sulphur Granules
Agriculture | Industrial Applications | Oil & Gas |
---|---|---|
Soil amendment: Lowers soil pH (acidifies alkaline soils) | Sulfuric acid production: Primary use (90% of all sulfur goes to H2SO4) | Byproduct from hydrodesulfurization |
Fertilizer: Provides essential nutrient for plant protein and chlorophyll formation | Rubber vulcanization | Stored and transported globally for conversion into acids or fertilizers |
Fungicide: Controls powdery mildew and mites in crops | Detergents, dyes, explosives, and paper manufacturing |
one of the most widely used chemicals in agriculture and industry:
Major Uses of Urea
Agriculture | Industrial Uses | Medical & Cosmetic |
---|---|---|
Primary Nitrogen Fertilizer (~46% nitrogen content) | Melamine production (plastics, laminates, adhesives) | Found in **dermatology creams** (moisturizing, keratolytic) |
Promotes leaf and plant growth | Urea-formaldehyde resins (used in particle board, plywood) | Used to treat **dry skin, eczema, and psoriasis** |
Used in **granular, prilled, or liquid** forms | Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) – known as AdBlue, used to reduce NOx emissions | |
Can be applied directly to soil or dissolved in irrigation water | Explosives – in the form of **urea nitrate** | |
Often blended with other fertilizers (like DAP, NPK) | Deicing agent – environmentally safer alternative to salt |
